The shot opens to reveal Selena Frost, dressed in a black t-shirt and gray legging-tights. Her platinum-blonde hair is tied up in a braid.
“So… this is a first for me.” She shifts nervously in her seat. “Training someone…”
The shot immediately changes to inside the ring where The Snow Queen waits.
“Hey!” comes a voice as a woman, raven-haired and shorter rolls into the ring. “You Selena?”
“Yes!” Selena replies nervously, her hand playing with her braid. “That’s me. You must be-“
Entering the ring, the second woman stands up to her full height – shorter than Selena. She wears heavy eye-makeup and her hair is either a wig or dyed black, Selena is not sure.
“Lady Dracina.” The girl speaks in a rather dark tone, which causes Selena to tilt her head.
“Really?” she lifts an eyebrow. “What’s your real name?”
The question seems to surprise the woman, who takes a second to recover. “Does it really matter?”
“Actually…it does.” Selena replies, her tone still gentle but her gaze is locked on her pupil before the camera shifts back to the stationary shot of Selena in her chair.
“I don’t like gimmicks.” She sighs. “I mean… I know this is a business of entertainment – I’ve done it – but fake names and things like that… bleh…” she shudders. “It’s not that I’m against it but… okay, you see someone like CJ O’Donnell – what is he? What does he do? He’s apparently this ‘ladies’ man’. Literally, he hit on me the moment I stepped into the compound. First day – when I looked a mess” she pffts a sound as she remembers. “And then there’s Jacoby Spencer – acting all tough and leader-like when he’s kicking people off his team. It’s like he’s overcompensating–“ she shakes her head. “My point is that, people that pretend to be something other than themselves, I never got it fully. I liked being ‘me’. Even if that was unpopular. I want to be real. I want to be genuine. And if I’m training someone, I want them to be genuine to. Because with that honesty? Comes lessons.”
The shot returns to the two women in the ring, the trainee slowly pulling her black wig off to reveal blonde hair. “Felicia.” She answers. “My name is Felicia Lorraine – not really a wrestler name.”
“I disagree.” Selena answers, a little pride in her voice. “I’d be more intimidated by ‘Felicia Lorraine’ than ‘Lady Dracina’.”
The shot immediately changes from Selena’s smiling to Felicia sitting in the ‘interview room’ as Selena did.
“I’ve always been told that you have to make a big impression. Everyone’s watching you. Never let anyone forget your name or who you are….” She searches her mind for the right words. “Go big or go home! That’s what I believe!”
The shot changes to the two women wrestling in the ring, the experienced Selena letting Felicia try some moves and strikes on her, like arm drags and suplexes. As Felicia tries, however, to do a backflip kick, she miscalculates the move and just flops onto her stomach. Selena, who has been running from being whipped towards the ropes, manages to stop herself as she kneels to Felicity.
“What was that?” she asks.
“I fudged a move.” Felicity remarks, her frustration is clear on her face.
“Yeah, but why did you even do it? A kick or an elbow would have been fine.”
“Because everyone can do a kick or an elbow!” Angrily, Felicity pushes herself up. “Come on!”
With a shrug, Selena grapples up with Felicity as the two continue to wrestle, Selena’s voice being heard from her interview segment before the shot changes back to it.
“I wish I had more experience training people.” Selena admits. “I wish I could be gentler in my approach. But I’ve always been blunt. I rather not hide behind fascades. I sort of envy Daniela for that – she must be killing this.” She exhales sharply. “Daniela knows how to talk to people, really get to know them. Athletically, I’d put CJ as the best leader in ‘skills’ for Red Team but motivator? Negotiator? It’s Daniela by a mile. I mean, if it wasn’t for her, I’m sure Jessie Lee and I would be at each other’s throats by now.” Selena tenses. “I wish she had opted to trade teams…” she mutters to herself before she turns her head back to the camera. “Sorry, off-track there.”
The shot returns to the sparring session. Various shots are shown from both sides – moments where Felicity strikes and grapples Selena and moments where Selena does the same to her. There are even moments where Selena can be seen coaching Felicity on moves such as a headlock and how to improve on her kicks. The shot changes to later in the session where Selena is drinking from her water bottle.
“Alright, then what do you do?” she asks Felicia.
“Well…” the younger woman looks around. “I’d go up there to the top turnbuckle and I’d hit my finisher.”
“What’s your finisher?”
“I was thinking about the Shooting Star Press. I’d call it the-“
“’Thinking about it?’. Have you ever done it before?” the question cuts off Felicia who can be seen at a loss for words.
“I…no.” she stammers out.
“Then why the hell would you pick it?” Selena asks. “Do you know how dangerous that move is?”
“Yeah, that’s what I read online. And I can do it!” Felicia argues. “It makes people take notice!”
“And if you jump wrong, or move wrong, or slip off the turnbuckle, or your opponent moves out of the way, you could crash and burn!”
The tension is massive as the two stare each other down, Selena’s ‘interview voice’ playing over it before changing back to that shot.
“Felicity has some amazing insights.” She explains. “You know… she’s quick, she’s got a variety of moves, but everything seems so over-the-top with her. Like ‘how can I do the biggest move, the flashiest finisher’ something like that. And that’s… that’s not what works here.”
“I get it.” In-ring Selena tries. “You want your ‘big break’. You want everyone to take notice. But it doesn’t happen overnight. No matter how much makeup you put on or how flashy your moves are, if you’re not genuine, they-“ she gestures to empty seats. “They will know. And if all you care about is flash and no substance, they will know. It took me two years of training and learning who I was before I became world-champion material. And four more years before I could continuously stay at that level. And if all you’re consumed about is getting to that finish line… then you’ll never make it.”
Again, the two stare at one another before the shot changes back to Felicia’s interview.
“I just want to be noticed! What is so wrong with that? Selena has everything going for her – She’s ‘The Face of SCW’ or whatever! She just doesn’t get what the struggle is for someone like me…” Felicia takes a moment to consider her options. “I just… I want to make a name for myself just like she did. Is that so wrong?”
“Hey…” a voice comes from behind Felicia, surprising the young woman. Turning around, she sees none other than Jessie Lee standing behind her, the TIA women’s champion strolling around to gaze at her. “I don’t want any-“
“No trouble, kid.” Lee smiles. “I just overheard you say you want to make a name for yourself.”
“Y-yeah…” Felicia’s voice trails off. “Selena wants me to learn who I am…”
“Psssh…” Lee scoffs. “Coming from a woman I beat for this belt…” she flashes her TIA championship in front of Felicia. “She doesn’t know what she’s talking about. You want to know how to make an impression?”
“Yes!” Felicia nods her head. “How?”
“Simple.” Lee grins wickedly, not caring that the camera is still filming. “Let’s say you not only outwrestle Selena… you make sure she stays out. Out of this tournament. Out of this series. Out of wrestling… permanently.”
Felicia’s eyes go wide. “What are you saying?“
“I’m saying… maybe you just overdo it a little and show Selena how much better you are… to the point where she can’t continue here… and then me, seeing your skills, well I advocate for you to take her place on the Red Team… giving you REAL opportunities and chances to make a name for yourself.”
“You…” there is a flicker of hesitation in Felicia’s eyes before she whispers. “You can do that?”
Another wicked grin comes across Lee’s face. “Trust me, baby.” She reaches out to pat Felicia’s arm before excusing herself. “Oh… just one more thing.” She calls back over her shoulder. “I’ve heard that Selena’s gotten a terrible case of ‘bad luck’ lately… maybe that can help you.”
Jessie Lee walks out of shot, leaving Felicia there, looking at nothing, but contemplating her next move against her trainer…
“So… this is a first for me.” She shifts nervously in her seat. “Training someone…”
