Event #1 Prompt and Orientation CD Piece
Last Man Standing
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE REVEAL
In a dimly lit octagon, shadows dance across the walls as the glow of candlelight flickers. At the heart of the room, an ornate, antique wooden table holds an old-fashioned projector. A hooded figure stands to the side, their features shrouded beneath the deep cowl of their cloak.
With deliberate, enigmatic movements, the figure presses a squared red button, and the projector springs to life with the familiar click start of spinning reels. A beam of light pierces the darkness, projecting onto an unfinished concrete wall an image that seems to come from another realm. The camera slow-zooms towards the projection.
The clicking of the reels speed up as the image sharpens, revealing a sprawling, enigmatic landscape amongst trees and mountains. The drone footage crests over rolling green hills and swoops down low, speeding over blades of grass dancing in the setting sunlight. A walled fortress emerges at the top of the next hill, a steel gate defending its sovereignty. Debris and vegetation threaten to overtake the abandoned road. The insignia on the gate displays a stylized crest with three broken letters written on it…
T… I… A…
The gate opens and the screen plunges into darkness.
The hooded figure's voice resonates, its timbre dark and foreboding. "Welcome, esteemed participants… to the greatest challenge of your lives…" the figure begins, each word a carefully-crafted thread of anticipation.
“Let’s talk about how we got here.”
Light returns to the landscape as a wind blows the leaves of a cherry blossomed tree over a green meadow. We enter a montage of a small picturesque town nestled in the heart of America, a sense of community fills the air. The streets are adorned with American flags, their colors dancing in the morning breeze. Families gathered in a park for a celebration. Children run with excitement, their faces painted like wild cats and colorful butterflies. Parents share stories of their lives, laughing and embracing others over a bounty of food and family.
“This is the life you were promised. A life of happiness and joy and freedom. Where you’re connected to every living person on earth and have access to all the information that’s ever been collected. You have everything at your fingertips, and yet, you’re still unhappy. Why is that? Is it because you deserve more? Or is it because it’s not real?”
The camera transitions to the interior of a packed bus. Faces pressed against windows, people stand shoulder-to-shoulder as the vehicle rumbles through city streets. The struggle for personal space is palpable, yet the passengers endure with stoic resolve.
“Why don’t we tell an American success story? About paving your own path and achieving your dreams through innovation and hard work. What I’m talking about is freedom. That’s the dream.”
The scene shifts to a row of dilapidated apartment buildings. Peeling paint and weathered exteriors tell a story of neglect. People rush in and out, carrying groceries and laundry, demonstrating the everyday hustle required to make ends meet.
“The sign tells you to leave the place better than you found it, but they never teach you how to do that. Society expects you to figure it out on your own and wonders why you can’t when you fall short of the mark.”
We see the bored face of a fast-food worker flipping burgers, custodians cleaning office spaces, and delivery drivers navigating crowded streets. The montage captures the repetitive nature of these roles and the uncelebrated effort that keeps the world moving.
“What nobody will tell you is that you’re capable of so much more than you realize. You should take more credit for what you’ve done. You should get more recognition. If someone just stopped and pointed you in the right direction, you could run for miles. But the world doesn’t care about your problems. They don’t understand your struggle or feel your pain. But I see you. And I appreciate you for being who you are.”
The montage culminates with a scene of a military homecoming. A family embracing a disabled veteran returning from serving overseas in a wheelchair, their joy and relief palpable.
“What the world needs most isn’t influencers or activists. It needs characters. Role-players. People who add value to the group as a whole. We can’t all be generals and quarterbacks and kings. I’ve been looking for people who are about more than just instant gratification. And I’ve been planning a game to put them to the test. You’re one of those people.”
“Champions are the face of a company. They gets the views and make the money. But this company won’t exist in 6 months. So, what we really need are challengers. Competitors who possess strength, toughness, skill. Those are the tools of the trade. But hard work, resilience and humility are the essence of life.”
The montage ends, frozen on a single image, The World Series of Wrestling logo on a white flag, at a beachside bonfire, waving among firelight, flames licking at its threads. The fabric resists before giving in to the fire. Then it catches and burns to ashes, unmaking itself.
The camera fades to black and pulls back to the dimly lit concrete room. The figure reaches up and slowly, pulling back the hood of his cloak. The movement was deliberate, every inch of fabric relinquished, revealing a familiar face. Through the shadows, the initiated can make out the man they call ‘Saucey’. The former wrestling promoter, talk show host and heir to the Motts Applesauce fortune. His eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE END OF THE WORLD SERIES
He yanks a beaded chain dangling from the ceiling, which illuminates the room in incandescent light. His shaven head and sly grin casting a ripple of unease throughout the room.
With a theatrical flourish, Saucey extended his arms as if presenting himself to an audience. "Ladies and gentlemen," his voice carried a melodious tone that was equal parts whimsy and wonder, "My name is Tim. Some of you know me by my on-air persona, The Sauce Boss. Or you may know me from THIS IS AWESOME PROMOTIONS or the original WORLD SERIES OF WRESTLING. You can call me whatever you want. I’m just like you." His eyes sparkle with an almost childlike delight.
“But after a series of breakups, fights, and failures, I have come to the determination that I just don’t belong in the pro-wrestling business. Probably never did. And that’s ok. I’m at peace with it. So, after the end of the competition I’m hoping to retire, move to Florida, and work on my miniature golf game until I die of dysentery. Anyway, the new event I have planned is vastly different from the grand super-show that was promised only a couple months ago. It’s no longer the grand opus Meraviglia that I envisioned, but I’m still proud of it.”
“The original booking featured 32 world-class wrestlers, 4 hall-of-famers, half a dozen blue chip sponsors, and a collection of the best minds in the game. But that dream evaporated in my hands. The money dried up. The phone stopped ringing. We put together the biggest and best event of the year and it was over before it ever got started. I swear, we were going to do it right and a lot of people were going to be really happy about being part of something special.”
“It broke me. Mentally and financially. So, we took things underground. Off the grid. For your eyes only. And I don’t want ANY of the things I wanted anymore. I want to give it all back. The only question is, ‘Who is most deserving of inheriting my estate?’”
“I believe that the only fair way to do this is through competition. You want to get the best out of people? Make them FIGHT for it. And that’s exactly what I have planned for you.”
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE RULES
“This competition will challenge you like nothing has before. It’ll change you. It’ll ask you questions about yourself that make you uncomfortable. But it will make you GROW. And when you look in the mirror at the end of this road, you’ll be a better human being.”
“There’s only 1 rule on this ride. DON’T QUIT. You quit on me; who cares? But if you quit on yourself, you have to live with that. You’ve already made it this far. Why don’t you just see this thing through? You’ve never been closer to the finish line than you are right now.”
“You aren’t exclusive. And these aren’t trials. But you deserve to be here. You’ve earned it. You won’t be eliminated because this thing isn’t about being the best in the world. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself.”
“Coming into the event, you’ve been split into two teams of 7 living in two common living spaces. A blue team in the blue wing of the compound and a red team in the red wing of the compound. Here are those teams:
Blue Team
Jacoby Spencer
Brooke Blakely
Candice “Voodoo” Page
Ragnarok
Zara Ivory
Eli Buchanan
& Penelope Plimmswood
Red Team
Nick Danger
Selena Frost
CJ O'donnell
Jessie Lee
Crystal Hilton
Daniela Ray Weathers
& Martina Richards
“The red team consists of Nick Danger, Selena Frost, CJ O'donnell, Jessie Lee, Crystal Hilton, Daniela Ray Weathers, and Martina Richards.”
“To each of you, my advice is to BE unapologetic. BE authentically you. Come as you are and take no prisoners. Immerse yourself in the process because being broken down isn’t a bad thing. It’s only after we’ve lost it all that we have everything to gain.”
“Now that you know the why, let’s discuss the how. In two weeks time, each of you will be picked up by a driver from Kayfabe Airlines. It’ll be a fancy timey-wimey type vehicle that will take you to our secret compound. You’ll still have the ability to appear at your other bookings without incident but confidentiality is of the utmost importance. At the compound, you’ll be provided for, cared for, and waited on. All of your needs will be fulfilled, we just need you to train, socialize, strategize. And during the challenges you’ll tread the delicate line between the physical game and the mental game, never forget that you aren’t competing with enemies, you’re competing with yourself.”
“Our challenge culminates in a grand finale that promises to push you beyond your limits. It’ll be your finest moment, and my final moment. The stakes are staggering, the prize immense. Just be true to yourself and do what you do best.”
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A PARTING MESSAGE
“Within the state-of-the-art walls of the compound, you stand as a diverse assembly of warriors, athletes, and thrill-seekers. A tapestry of skill sets and personas, ranging from seasoned combatants thirsting for glory to daring souls yearning for the thrill of adventure. This is our canvas, painted with blood and sweat, pushing you to the edge of your abilities. If strength was the only thing that mattered, the elephant would be the king of the jungle. Build your allies, navigate your rivals, and employ your strategies.”
“As the embers of your spirit burn brightly in this crucible of unsanctioned competition, embrace your fate. The journey ahead is one of self discovery. Be vigilant, my friends.”
“The World Series of Wrestling is dead. Welcome to LAST MAN STANDING.”
