SCENE: ‘Rock Star’ Robbie Marrs, dressed in his usual wrestling attire with jeans and a torn T-shirt, and the headband containing his bushy hair, steps up to the microphone and faces judges Sauce Boss, Theo Pryce, Larry Tact sitting behind a table inside the Velvet Rabbit.
Marrs is bemused at the surroundings. He takes a deep breath and begins…
First off, I’d like to thank everyone associated with the World Series of Wrestling for the opportunity to compete. When I entered this competition, I knew it would be an uphill challenge with so many talented wrestlers vying for the top prize. I was under no illusion that I was going to win this thing. I know where I sit in the standings and know this is my final event before the cut happens. And that’s fine.
My involvement in this competition has been a positive experience- no matter where I end up in the standings. ‘Rock Star’ Robbie Marrs knows who he is. He is a middle card wrestler in a company that bills itself as ‘Bringing Minor League Wrestling to the American Heartland.’ He is a weekend warrior in the wrestling industry who works full time in an office job and as a devoted family man. I am so appreciative of Missouri Valley Wrestling for allowing me to be a weekend warrior in the wrestling business. And I am equally appreciative to the WOSW for the chance to put my skills… such as they are… up against the tremendously talented field assembled for this competition. It has been a dream come true. Did I do as well as I’d hoped I would? No. However, I am the better wrestler… and person… for taking the opportunity and giving it my best shot.
I could also have just not bothered to show up for the final event. But that’s not who ‘Rock Star’ Robbie Marrs is. When I start something… I finish it. I follow through to the conclusion. I will see the WSOW competition through the very end no matter what the final result is.
The question at hand is “If you could fight anyone, alive or dead, real or fictional, on camera or off, who would you fight and what would you say to them?“
My answer… I don’t know.
Because I am a part-time wrestler, I really haven’t had much of a chance to develop a rivalry in MVW. My time has been spent in MVW’s Heartland Division- the house show title belt which sits a step below the main division that vies for the top title. The main goal for most of the wrestlers there is to move up from the Heartland to the Men’s Division and that’s where things can get a little heated.
I had a little bit of a tiff with one Darin Zion at one point. Back in March, I sat at number two in the rankings and Zion was number one. I lost the first time we met and Darin went on to win the Heartland title. I would wrestle one of the better matches I’ve had in MVW when I defeated Ken Kardoucheian to become the number one contention for the Heartland title to get another shot at Darin. I lost.
So back to the drawing board. I defeated Ultratron-6.1 in April in a number one contender’s match and faced Zion again. This time I did better and really gave Darin a battle but Zion would prevail again.
So again… we went back to the gym and went to work again. I had to defeat Ultratron-6.1 again in a number one contender’s match to get a third shot at the Heartland title against Darin Zion. This time, the hard work paid off and I defeated Zion to become the new Heartland champion.
Best moment ever.
So to Darin Zion, I would say thank you. Thank you for forcing me to push deep down and bring everything I had to bear in the three title matches I wrestled against him. I know that you were headed back up the High Octane Wrestling AND you would be wrestling in PRIME as well but to me, that does not take away the fact that I was able for one night… put together the wrestling match of my life. I will never forget that night. Even though I only held the Heartland title for just over a week- Ken Kardoucheian of the reality show ‘Krampin’ Up with the Kardoucheians’ would defeat me eight days later- winning the Heartland title is my ultimate achievement in my pro wrestling career.
Who would I like to wrestle? There are many wrestlers in MVW that I would love to set foot in a ring against.
J.J. Bittinger. He’s an old-school battler who came from Appalachian Mountain Championship Wrestling to MVW. Not the most talented wrestler out there but he’s a grinder who will get you on the mat and just try to squeeze the life out of you. His style and my style would make for an interesting battle. would like to try my luck out with him.
‘The Demi-God of HOW’ Scott Stevens. Stevens is best known for his time at High Octane Wrestling and has been wrestling part-time at MVW as well as HOW. Stevens is a two-time HOW World Champion. I faced him a few weeks back and he made quite an impression on me. Even at age 43, Stevens is still quality compared to the rest of us in MVW. I’d love to get another chance at him.
Buckshot Henderson. He’s another one who came to MVW from AMCW. Old-school to the core. Buckshot is a handful to deal with in the ring. He knows all the tricks of the trade. What he lacks in talent, Buckshot makes up with moxie, graft, and sheer determination. He’s a tough MF and never an easy match. It’s always a pleasure to get into the ring with him.
But I guess the one guy I would love to get my hands on- is Ken Kardoucheian. Again, Kardoucheian is part of the Kardoucheian Empire… Hollywood reality show stars. Ken’s a legend in his own mind. His ego has never been able to cash the checks he tries to write out.
I would tell Ken this… you do have talent inside the ring. You do have charisma. You do have the look. But you don’t have the heart. It’s tiring hearing your father… Kardoucheian Family patriarch Kris Kardoucheian… telling everyone who will listen… which isn’t very many… that you and your brothers are stars and deserve to hold the top titles. Ken, you have had numerous chances to show us that you do belong at the top… to hold a top title… and you’ve failed to do so.
Yes, you’ve had some success in the Heartland Division. You’ve been a two-time Heartland Champion but you still haven’t fully realized your full potential. You expect it to be handed to you but you’re not willing to do what it takes to earn the top title. I would kill to have your talent, Ken. ‘Rock Star’ Robbie Marrs has to find a way to maximize what talent I have. You have a natural ability that I will never have. You do have it but one of these days you need to stop listening to your father, put the reality show aside, and show us what you really can do inside the ring.
The next time you and I meet, I will show you that hard work, graft, determination, and an unshakeable drive to maximize my meager talents will always beat someone who thinks he’s good but isn’t willing to take the time or make the effort to actually become really good.
And with that, I once again thank the WSOW for the opportunity and I wish good luck to the rest of the wrestlers in the competition.
Robbie turns off the microphone and takes one final look around. Satisfied, he places the microphone down on the floor and turns to leave for the last time.
Thank you.
