It is a funny question, isn't it?
Why am I a wrestler?
Is it because I have an insatiable bloodlust that can only be satisfied through the shared suffering I hold with my opponent in the ring? ...No, i'm not nearly that sadistic. There is a point where "pain is pleasure" can only go so far.
Is it because I have an insatiable desire to show everyone just how cool I can be? ...No, I'm not nearly that vain. People know me, and that is good enough for me.
No, I wrestle for one simple reason.
Quia Possum Luctari. I wrestle because I can.
Now I know what you might be thinking. "Dionysus, that isn't a really inspiring answer." But the truth is, I could have been anything I wanted to. I studied ancient history, and I could have gone to be an archaeologist or researcher, discovering answers to mysteries yet to be solved. I studied medicine, and could have become a health coach, helping people become the best version of themselves.
But instead, I chose to be a wrestler. There isn't much more to it than that.
Now, if that satisfies your curiosity, you are free to move about the cabin. Disembark. Be gone.
...
...
...
Have the disinterested left?
Good, I hate those guys. Sticks in the mud, very unfun. Now those of you who remain will get the true answer.
Quia Possum Luctari. I wrestle because I can. It is a reason, but also a philosophy I live by.
I suppose out of all the reasons in the world, I chose to do this because I am nothing if not a showman. There is value in discovering one's self in this medium, like an actor preparing for the role of a lifetime. Then, that overture hits, and you walk out onto that stage, in front of all those glinting eyes...there's a rush you feel every time you step forward into your role. And a role is precisely what I am playing. "Dionysus" is meant to be the embodiment of my true self; a flair for the theatrics, a lover of wine(among other things), and yet somewhere buried deep beneath the surface, an unbridled feeling of chaos and revelry, one that stands to burst forward if not kept under close guard.
...Or maybe its just gas. Flair for the dramatics, remember?
I am but a player in a number of different acts we present. In some cases I am the newcomer; bright-eyed, unaware of the danger before me. In others I am the veteran challenger, having survived what has come before me and ready to face my greatest challenges. Ever still are the acts where I am a champion, holding the prize while stealing the spotlight. Good and evil, lead or supporting actor, we all have a role to play on the stage.
And if you think this does not apply to here, in the wrestling world, then I must simply disagree, for we all have our parts to play. For some, we are looking to have our big moment in the spotlight. For others, we are recapturing what we have lost in the past. We still have an overture, the stage is our ring, and the audience is much more interactive in either showing their support or disdain. The biggest difference, I suppose, is that our stage combat is a bit more painful. More real.
So now you know the truth of it. I am here, in this business, to fill a role that is needed. Where that may be depends on what show I choose to take a part in. Whether I triumph or fail, none can deny that I play my role beyond expectation. I bring people to their limits. That reputation alone earned me my golden ticket here, to this competition. I'm here to show you all that it takes more than pure strength and willpower to be the best. You also need the talent, the presence, the presentation, to also make your mark.
So the next time that curtain rises, as the butterflies fill your stomach when the first notes of your overture hit, I will remind myself of why I am here.
Quia.
Possum.
Luctari.
I wrestle.
Because I can.
