The room is dark, except for one spotlight, which is aimed directly at a chair in the center of the room. Sat on that chair is “The Original” Fred Debonair, or as he likes to be referred to as now, “The Kingdom”.
Fred: “It’s crazy that it’s taken twenty five years, that’s quarter of a century, for people to want to know why I do what I do, why I’m a Wrestler! Well, I’m sorry to disappoint everybody but there’s no special, sentimental story behind it… There’s no tale of endearment, the simple fact of the matter is that my father was a Wrestler, as was his before him. This industry is a heirloom really, except that there is one minor plot twist… You see my dad, he didn’t want me to be a Wrestler.
We grew up in Hell's Kitchen, NY, so as well as Wrestling for several promotions before owning his own, my dad was also a “family” man and if you know anything about Hell’s Kitchen you’ll understand what I’m saying. So my dad, he wanted me to do the same thing and although I’ve done a few things here and there in my life pertaining to that business, I’ve always been about allowing people to see the best of what I’ve got and it doesn’t matter what I do, to get there…
I’m a Wrestler because I can be, I’m a Wrestler because I’m the best there is, at it and I’m a Wrestler because I enjoy putting the boot into people and turning them over. Tournament Cup? I’m there, championship Belts? You know I’ll be walking away with those, too. I’m the man who turned over his own son and daughter as well as his sister, to be where he is now and I’ve never regretted a moment of it… In fact I’ve enjoyed every last second! I mean, I am who I am and I won’t be changing that… For anyone.”
Fred stands and flips the chair around, kicking off *off camera* before continuing.
Fred: “If you show your loyalty to me, I’m yours through and through, blood in - blood out. I am the man you want to tag with when it comes down to it, I’m the man you want in your stable when you form and build, trust me on that! But get on my bad side? Cross my path in any way other than to shake my hand and you’re going to wish you were put out of your misery and were dead, when The Kingdom comes for you… You won’t even have the chance to think twice when your name goes up on that board and the target on your back…
Why am I a Wrestler? Because I get to do this. I get to talk the talk and walk the walk, alongside it. I get to savour every word said to me by some arrogant know it all junkwad who thinks he’s got some kind of form, before shoving his words down his throat and making him regret he even chose this profession, let alone agreed to step into the ring with me. And I’m an equal opportunity destroyer too… I would never assume one’s gender, or identification. You want The Kingdom? You come for The Kingdom! But just remember that if you do so, you’re signing your own death warrant.
I don’t do this because “it’s fun” although it is, I don’t do this because “I need the money” because I definitely don’t. I do this because it is me, I am it and I love every - single - moment those ingrates out there are jeering me and every second spent spilling someone’s blood if I’m not creating a bruise, welt, or concussion. I’m a Wrestler… Because I am. And if anybody specifically is asking… You know where to find me.”
Fred doesn’t lose eye contact as he backs away, before the spotlight clicks off, leaving us in darkness.
