Why does ‘Rock Star’ Robbie Marrs love pro wrestling?
Good question. I remember watching it on television when I was a kid. I wrestled a bit in high school. I wasn’t the greatest wrestler in the world but I more than held my own with kids my age. So I wrestled on the varsity team for the final two years of high school and made a couple of rounds in our high school state tournament before bowing out. But then I graduated from high school and pursued a higher education- college.
I also liked music and dabbled in playing guitar as a teenager so once I got to college I continued to play. I wasn’t the greatest guitar player but I still managed to get into a few bands. I had such fun being up there and performing for people. But then graduation from college beckoned and this whole barren and scary landscape called ‘real life’ stared me right in the face.
So away went the guitar and then hooked on with the company that I still work at today- a big, big change from the free-wheeling days of college life.
Look people, in real life Rob Martin is really just a quiet ‘guy who tries to stay ‘under the radar.’ I have a really nice office job that pays me well. Nine-to-five. Business world. Good benefits. Stable environment. Yeah, it’s a pain in the ass at times. Yeah, people are a big pain in the ass at times in the big corporate world. It wasn’t the worst way to spend my life.
Then I met my wife, Leah.
Leah Thomas wrestles in Missouri Valley Wrestling as ‘Queen Cool’ Leah Iris. I just happened to meet her at a meet and greet before an MVW house show in Joplin, Missouri on Friday, December 8th, 2017. Leah was one half of MVW’s Tag Team Champions at that time and we sat down and talked during the meet and greet. It went so well that she asked me if I wanted to hang out backstage and watch the show. C.J. and Leah wrestled in the co-main event in a non-title match against the Korver Sisters. Leah got the pinfall with a move called the Pittsburgh Plunge.
We eventually started dating and two years got married… at a wrestling show. MVW’s MVWA 90 show in Chicago, Illinois. Leah wasn’t booked that night so we had a justice of the peace show up and got married in the ring in between two matches. Leah’s young son from a previous relationship also was there. Sweet moment.
No, it was a really cool moment with all the MVW wrestlers at ringside witnessing the marriage.
During the week, we were your typical family. But when the weekend came along? I would accompany Leah to wherever MVW held their house shows. In the ring, Leah struts down the ramp to the ring to Donnie Iris’s “Ah Leah”- hence her wrestling name- ‘Queen Cool” Leah Iris.
Thanks to Leah, I also got the wrestling bug and joined MVW in early 2019 and I haven’t regretted one moment of doing it. For the same reason that thousands of people show up at our Missouri Valley Wrestling house shows all over the Midwest to escape from real life for a couple of hours, some schmuck named Rob Martin gets to shove aside work and the headaches associated with it to go to the ring and to pretend to be a rock star to help our fans forget their trials and tribulations for a little while. Rob Martin gets to be bigger than life for two hours. Rob Martin is a devoted husband and father outside the ring- ‘Rock Star’ Robbie Marrs inside the ring.
Why do I love it? Because there’s nothing like that feeling of standing on the stage and hearing people singing along with my entrance song. There’s nothing like the feeling of being in the ring and hearing the crowd roar when you do something that pops them.
Let’s put it this way. Some couples go away for the weekend to far-flung exotic places… camping… concerts… cabins… fancy hotels… and so on… and so on…
For Leah and me and her son, wrestling is a family thing… our bonding time. When it’s time to hit the road for the weekend, we get to experience something we both love to do with all of our hearts- go wrestling.
That’s the reason why ‘Rock Star’ Robbie Marrs loves wrestling.
