16 movies and tv shows to help inspire your efed writing. If you disagree, fight me. My opinion is impeccable. Seriously, some great content here.
1. The Wrestler - A faded professional wrestler must retire but finds his quest for a new life outside the ring a dispiriting struggle.
Our take: A dark dramatic looks of wrestling at the end of his career. Moving stuff.
2. GLOW - A look at the personal and professional lives of a group of women who perform for a wrestling organization in Los Angeles during the 1980s.
Our take: Women’s wrestling at a young wrestling startup. We needed more seasons of this show.
3. Heels - Two brothers and rivals - one a villain, or "heel," in the ring; the other a hero, or "face," war over their late father's wrestling promotion, vying for national attention in small-town Georgia.
Our take: Brother vs. Brother in the middle of IC and OOC fueds. Very good stuff.
4. Spider-Man - When bitten by a genetically modified spider, a nerdy, shy, and awkward high school student gains spider-like abilities that he eventually must use to fight evil as a superhero after tragedy befalls his family.
Our take: Yes, it’s a super hero movie, but watch the wrestling scene with Bonesaw. Iconic. Also gives you a good look at a dirty promoter.
5. Bloodsport - "Bloodsport" follows Frank Dux, an American martial artist serving in the military, who decides to leave the army to compete in a martial arts tournament in Hong Kong where fights to the death can occur.
Our take: A secret underground fighting tournament based on a true story. Great characters and tropes. JCVD does the full splits and fights blind. A classic.
6. Lionheart - An Ex-French Soldier begins participating in underground street fights in order to make money for his brother's family.
Our take: This is a cheesy 90’s movie, but the underground fight scene is so cliché and awesome that you will laugh. The fight in the empty pool was the best.
7. Beyond the Mat - A heartfelt documentary focusing on the day-to-day lives of professional wrestlers, some on the rise, some on the wane, and others fighting for their lives.
Our take: One of the original movies to lift the veil and show the reality of what wrestling looks like backstage. It was a turning point in wrestling history and the birth of smart marks.
8. You Cannot Kill David Arquette - Actor David Arquette attempts a rocky return to the sport that stalled his promising Hollywood career.
Our take: A step by step tutorial on how to go from wrestling fan to pro wrestler. The most epic face turn I’ve ever seen on screen and it’s mostly OOC.
9. Over The Top - Tough trucker Lincoln Hawk is determined to win back his son and triumph at the world arm wrestling championships.
Our take: The best father/son story in a competitive/tournament type movie. Drop the hammer.
10. Rocky IV - Rocky Balboa proudly holds the world heavyweight boxing championship, but a new challenger has stepped forward: Drago, a six-foot-four, 261-pound fighter who has the backing of the Soviet Union.
Our take: Ok I don’t remember any of the movies individually, but the series is iconic for storytelling in a fight scenario and they say Rocky IV is the best of the 8-9 Rocky/Creed movies. If he dies, he dies.
11. Dark Side of the Ring - From backstage controversies to mysterious deaths and unsolved homicides, this series explores the darkest stories from the golden age of professional wrestling, and tries to find truth at the intersection of fantasy and reality.
Our take: Real stories about the wrestling industry and the bullcrap that it’s worst offenders get away with. It’s sobering to see your IC heroes become OOC villains, but any wrestling fan needs to hear these horrific stories.
12. Celebrity Death Match - Celebrities duel it out in a wrestling ring, the first one who dies loses.
Our take: Back before comedy died, you could watch shows which made fun of people and laugh at their elaborate fight/death scenarios. This show could never be made now, but is great inspiration for hardcore efedders.
13. One Punch Man - The story of Saitama, a hero that does it just for fun & can defeat his enemies with a single punch.
Our take: It’s an anime. While it isn’t wrestling specific like Ultimate Muscle, it is the story of an apathetic hero that can destroy any enemy with a single punch. It’s his story outside of the fighting that is the most entertaining.
14. The Fighter - Based on the story of Micky Ward, a fledgling boxer who tries to escape the shadow of his more famous but troubled older boxing brother and get his own shot at greatness.
Our take: Christian Bale is a shape shifter and Mark Wahlberg is the same character in every movie, but it gives a real Boston flavor to the struggle of the fighter trying to make something of himself. Good Movie.
15. Enter the Dragon - A secret agent comes to an opium lord's island fortress with other fighters for a martial-arts tournament.
Our take: The inspiration for games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, this is the original MMA movie. Possibly Bruce Lee’s best. Full of gimmicks. Made in the 70’s and still really good.
16. Ready to Rumble - Two slacker wrestling fans are devastated by the ousting of their favorite character by an unscrupulous promoter.
Our take: This is the one. If you can only watch one of these shows, watch this one. Writing by wrestling fans, for wrestling fans. It holds up 20 years later. It is fun. It is stupid. It is corny. It is perfect. Watch it twice.
